wind-down turmeric chai

Morning world, my name is Aish, and I can finally say that I’ve beaten my addiction to Starbucks skinny chai lattes. I honestly never thought I’d see the day when I could walk past the superchain without the intoxicating smell luring me in for an afternoon pick me up.

The truth is, I didn’t know what a real chai was until my Mum made me the authentic Indian way, and I’ve never looked back! The magic ingredient that gives this cosy drink that golden glow is turmeric– full of anti-inflammatory properties, it’s long been known in ancient Indian medicine for giving you that radiance from the inside out. Now who would say no to dewy, plump skin all year round? Plus, turmeric is fab for fighting that fluey feeling, so crank up the dose if you’re feeling a little run down.

You’ll definitely notice the difference in taste from the artificial Starbucks version, mostly down to the fact that this is full of REAL, rich spices like cinnamon and cardamom, instead of the sugar-loaded syrup pumped into what was once your favourite drink.

I actually find myself craving one of these just before bed, the healing spices send you right off into the most blissful sleep!

Simply blend:

200ml rice milk (/any other nut milk/full fat organic milk works, but rice milk gives it that lovely natural sweetness)

1-2 tsp of ground turmeric (start small and work your way up as you adjust to the taste!)

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp cardamom

1/2 tsp of tea masala mix (Fudco do a great one of ground ginger, black pepper, cardamom + nutmeg)

1 tbsp maca powder (optional)

1sp raw honey (optional)

Heat the mixture on the stove until the chai starts to simmer, then sieve it through into your mug- simples!

P.S. There’s always the choice to omit the turmeric if you just fancy a good old regular cup of chai- it’s just as delicious!
